Challenge: Identifying Innovation Opportunities in Healthcare
In this explorative project with Johnson & Johnson, our goal was to explore the European healthcare environment and identify new business and innovation opportunities. Our team, consisting of six strategy students, was given just one semester to familiarize ourselves with the healthcare industry, collaborate effectively, and deliver actionable insights to our client.

Approach: Immersing in the Healthcare Experience
To gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare professionals, we immersed ourselves in the daily routines of doctors and nurses. This involved actively participating in surgeries and observing key processes and behaviors from every angle. Our primary focus was on the patient journey, tracking their movement from the ward to the surgery room, recovery wake-up, and the ICU. We aimed to identify pain points and areas where innovation could improve patient care and healthcare efficiency.
Solution: Visualizing the Hospital Environment and Interactions
We gathered data from a variety of sources, including healthcare institutes, academic papers, and regulatory bodies, to enrich our analysis. To further our understanding, I led the development of a 3D model of a rural hospital, which served as a dynamic tool to visualize the hospital infrastructure and the interactions between various players, from patients to healthcare professionals. This model allowed us to identify system inefficiencies and uncover opportunities for innovation.
In parallel, I created a service blueprint to map the complex relationships and interactions between all key roles in the healthcare system. This blueprint was a vital tool that also accounted for stress levels among patients, staff, and visitors, providing a holistic view of the healthcare environment.
Impact: Delivering Tangible Insights for Innovation
With these comprehensive insights, we identified key problems and root causes affecting the healthcare system. We then presented our findings through storyboards and visual aids, which helped us communicate our insights in a more engaging and understandable way. These visuals facilitated detailed discussions with our client, guiding them through the identified opportunities for improvement and innovation.
Although the project’s results remain confidential to Johnson & Johnson, the project provided invaluable experience in healthcare innovation, user-centered research, and strategic opportunity identification.
